With the 2023 Women’s World Cup just a few months away, the No. 1-ranked U.S. women’s national team is feeling good following a dominating 2-0 victory over Canada in the 2023 SheBelieves Cup opener.

The match against Canada was billed as an elite-level rivalry matchup, but it was one-way traffic as an injury-stricken U.S. side still managed to completely dominate their overwhelmed northern neighbors.

Now, the American women hope to have a few regulars back in the lineup as they take on No. 11 Japan looking to secure a shot at a fifth-straight SheBelieves Cup title. Japan were defeated 1-0 by Brazil in their opening match which was turned on its head after legendary Brazilian attacker Marta made her return from a torn ACL in the final 20 minutes.

Japan ripped off 13 shots to Brazil’s nine throughout the game, but only managed to put one of those 13 efforts on target. Now they’ll have to contend with a U.S. defense that is recognized as being one of the best in the world even with the new faces introduced of late.

USWNT vs Japan lineups, team news

Both Rose Lavelle and Naomi Girma missed out on the opener against Canada with slight injuries picked up in training, and while they’re expected to recover for this match, manager Vlatko Andonovski wouldn’t commit to their return. Instead, he claimed if there’s “any risk of injury” they would be held out.

Natural left-back Emily Fox played the first half against Canada on the opposite flank and performed well, meaning she could end up there again as Crystal Dunn makes her slow recovery to full match fitness at left-back.

Mallory Swanson and Trinity Rodman were both exceptional against Canada and should return to the attack, with Sophie Smith out of the competition due to injury.

USA projected starting lineup (4-3-3): Naeher (GK) — Fox, Cook, Girma, Dunn — Lavelle, Sullivan, Horan — Rodman, Morgan, Swanson.

Japan have struggled to score of late against top international sides, shut out in three straight matches against Brazil, Spain, and England. Japanese 23-year-old Riko Ueki started at striker against Brazil, but it’s possible that veteran Mana Iwabuchi comes back in, with the Tottenham forward’s 85 caps and 37 goals providing much-needed experience to the attack. Japan are missing veteran Mina Tanaka who has not yet featured for club or country in 2023.

Captain Saki Kumagai is the rock at the back, with 130 caps at age 32. The Bayern Munich defender, formerly of Lyon, has an experienced back line to work with, but a young midfield in front of her. Forward Aoba Fujino, 19, earned her fourth cap against Brazil.

Japan projected starting lineup (5-4-1): Tanaka (GK) — Shimizu, Miyake, Kumagai, Minami, Sugita — Fujino, Hasegawa, Nagano, Miyazawa — Ueki.

USWNT vs Japan betting odds

The United States, as the No. 1 ranked team in the FIFA world rankings, are understandably heavy favorites in this match. Still, Japan, ranked No. 11 in the world, are given a slight shout of earning a result in this match, as we’ve seen the U.S. as far heavier favorites against more inferior sides.

Bookmakers are somewhat undecided on whether Japan can find the back of the net and contribute to the goals total. The U.S. side is a slight favorite to keep a clean sheet, while the over is somewhat skewed but not as much as could be after Japan conceded just a single goal to a good attacking Brazil side in their opener.
